White Ash Shino Mug
This mug began with a simple gesture: fingers drawn through the wet shino glaze, leaving vertical marks around the surface. I added wood ash over the top, knowing it would melt and move in the firing, but not knowing exactly where it would settle. In this firing the ash softened the marks rather than sharpening them, leaving pale yellow-green runs, gray speckling, and small flashes of orange where the clay shows through near the rim and foot. It’s a quiet piece, but the surface keeps changing the longer you look at it.

Wheel-thrown stoneware with shino glaze and wood ash, fired to cone 10 in reduction. The vertical lines come from finger swipes through the glaze before firing; the ash melts into the surface in the kiln, creating subtle runs and variation. 3.75" tall, 14 oz capacity. Food safe, dishwasher safe. Ships carefully wrapped within 5–7 days.
