Red Shino Yunomi — Harvest
This cup is close kin to others in the hakeme series — same session, same impulse, footed cups made one after another without a plan. But proportion changes everything. This one is wider, rounder, lower. It sits in the hand differently. I was thinking about fullness when I made it, and I think the form holds that.
Before glazing, I coated the outside in a thick layer of white slip applied with a hakeme brush, leaving soft ridges you can still feel on the surface. Red shino over the top, which surprised me in the kiln: instead of the deep iron red I expected, it came back golden, lustrous, warm. White shino inside. A light dusting of wood ash. The fire decided the rest.
About This Piece
Wheel-thrown stoneware with hakeme slip application, red shino and white shino glazes, wood ash surface, fired to cone 10 in reduction. The golden luster is a product of glaze thickness and kiln atmosphere — something I can encourage but not control. Part of a series of footed cups made in one unhurried studio session. 3.75" tall, 14 oz capacity. Food safe, dishwasher safe. Ships carefully wrapped within 5–7 days.
